Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - Got rear-end lifted.  Working on inner and outer tie rods. Very frustrating with skid plate all messed up.

  • Jeremy - Installed heated grips on my KTM to battle the winter air.

  • Steve -  Finished the onboard air and truck box. Got to test out the compressor today after church, that was kinda cool.

  • Aaron - Got the LMTV stuck in the field.  Got 3 more rigs stuck in the field trying to get it out.  Ended up using my Nissan and my 10k Warn winch to pull it out.

Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Steve, and Jeremy.

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - did some stuff

  • Jeremy - took my brother and sister inlaw Offroading for their first time in their XJ.

  • Steve -  Finally got my fenders painted.  Working on my truck box, and working on mounting on boards air.  Waiting for my winch to show up so I can do my front bumper. I also need to do some fender skirts so I don’t collect a bunch of mud in the air filter box and cause rust in other areas.

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Aaron, Steve, and Jeremy. And our guest Lance and Branden How’s everyone doing?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - went to Montana in the van.  Decided I’m buying a mig welder stay tuned for terrible welds. Just got pictures from my buddy that my bumper will be ready for paint

  • Jeremy - Went dirt biking to test out new boots.  Feet are still wet, but not as wet. Put the RTT back on the truck.  Got everything ready for the snow camping trip this weekend. Went up to the olympic mountains to look for snow.

  • Steve - Truck is back with the paint guy getting front fenders finished.  Picked up all the wood to do the bed box/ drawers. Would like to figure out how to use a drawer slide but the longest they make is 24 inches.  Not sure that will work. Found a coupon today for the HF 1.5 ton aluminum jack, so I used a visa gift card I got for xmas and picked it up. $63.59 with tax.  In store without coupon is $79.99. On Christmas day I pulled a guy out of a ditch. His buddies and him were up in the mountains with their all wheel drive Mercedes and Audis driving around in tennis shoes and sweatpants and shirts.  Completely unprepared. So after laughing at them, I chained up and pulled the guy out.

  • Aaron - Drove both my LMTV & Nissan in our lower field to see how “bad” traction is on soggy wet grass. Sighted in my .17hmr.  Bought a pair of uppers for the lowers I recently bought.

  • Lance -

  • Branden -

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Jeremy, Aaron, and Steve. How’s everyone doing?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - Busy family life did an oil change and planning on welding bumper together this weekend maybe even getting lift installed.

  • Jeremy - Changed the oil in the bike after the last ride.

  • Aaron - Took advantage of the black Friday sales and bought a couple AR-15 complete lowers. Haven't gotten my son's dirt bike running yet. A piece that is cast to the engine block is broken. I will JB Weld it. If that doesn't hold I'll need a new engine.

  • Steve - Got my front lights figured out. Got a driver side seat belt, waiting on the passenger side. Got the new hood on. Put a new thermostat in it. Sucks driving to work with everything iced over.  All in all I am really happy with how it's coming along.

Main Topic -

So you want to buy a car from an auction.

  • You need to find an auction that's close to you. And will sell to a private party.

  • Rules for buying at an auction. What are their guidelines and bidding rules.

  • Fees and taxes.  What fees will be due at time of sale, what taxes will you need to pay.  Out of state taxes.

  • Pick up procedures.  How long do you have to pick up the car before they start charging you storage fees?

  • Salvage title or a clean title?  What's it take to legally get a salvage title car back on the road?  Are you buying it to flip it? Or drive it. Be aware of bank requirements when borrowing money against a car with salvage title. What about you're insurance? What do they insure with a salvage title?

  • What kind of vehicle do you want/need.  Do as much research as possible on your particular vehicle before buying.  How many years do the major parts interchange? This is important, because the fewer the years for interchange on major parts, the more desirable, or expensive the vehicle will likely be, and the parts will be more expensive.

  • Spend some time checking your local buy sell ads to make sure you really understand the fair market value of the vehicle in good condition.

  • Get some estimates on worst case scenario repairs. What's the most it will cost to get the care into the condition you want.  This is very important. You don't want to overspend at the auction. You need to know what the repairs will cost and what the fair market value will be so you know how much to spend.  Don't forget auction fees, taxes, and delivery.

  • If you can't physically go look at it, and you need it to have a good motor or tranny, have it inspected.  Make sure your inspector will pay close attention to the details that concern you. If you go to inspect it make sure you take everything with you that you might need.  Extra oil, jump pack, fuel, and anything else you think you will need. They likely won't let you drive in their yard, so be prepared to pack your stuff.

  • Watch a couple auctions before your auction comes up. Get a feel for how if works. You don't want to lose because you were not prepared.

  •  When your auction is scheduled, block out that time so you can devote that time just to the auction.

  •  Don't get caught up in the bidding. It's really hard not to, but if you have a budget and a plan, it will be easy to walk away from it if the bidding goes to high. Realize that there will be another one sooner or later, don't get emotionally involved or attached.

  • Reserve vs pure sale vs buy it now.

  • Insurance vs private seller.  Is there a little know vehicle that has what you need, but is cheaper because its it's not as popular?

43328153_10217142517265829_1145779382015492096_n.jpg

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Jeremy, Aaron, and Steve. Also with us returning guest Mac! How’s everyone doing?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - still haven't done my oil change or fixed my muffler, I raptor lined my rig instead. Also made a quick trip down to Oregon to have Burger King with Aaron and tour his work then drive home. Then enjoyed wheeling in tahuya

  • Jeremy - still looking for dualsport. scouted for the listener run, then went on a listener run.

  • Aaron - Didn’t make it to Tahuya. I’ve been tearing up the gravel roads around my house. Wife authorized a hunting rifle purchase.

  • Mac - I’ve done a ton of research lately on regearing my JKU.  Need a little more torque and fuel economy. A bit sluggish on 35’s.  Getting ready for Moab in April. Just picked up a Hudson H9. Haven’t shot it yet, but hopefully next weekend after opening of duck season.  First time at Tahuya...had a blast. Brought a ton of mud home with me.

Feedback:

Roy wrote: I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma SR5 that has 29” tires.  Is this okay for the Tahuya run or do I need 31s? I only ask because I’d need a lift and I don’t feel like doing all that extra stuff.  Also will this be more open off roading or close quarters squeezing through trees?

2012 Toyota Tacoma Rally Truck.jpg

Hey guys. I found your podcast about a year ago and have been listening to your past podcasts.  I finally have gotten caught up and have enjoyed every episode.

In episode 187 you were talking about Reecer Creek being paved and surprised about.  One of you questioned if the pavement was laid down before the fires or after. As a former Ellensburg resident (I now live on the east coast) I can say that the road going up the hill there have been paved for 30 years or more. I used to as a young kid take Boy Scout camping trips up Reecer Creek. Later I took my old Datsun 210 hatchback up Reecer Creek and over the pass to Wenatchee. Love the area there and miss it sometimes.

Now that I am on the east coast I am struggling to find good areas to go off-road. Any ideas on how to search areas? I know much of the tools you mention tend to focus on the west coast areas.

Any ideas are appreciated and keep up the good work on the podcast.

Going back to the wise food and added to much water to pack lol. I have definitely been there  before with my mountain house meal chili mac. I've had to correct the water level to my meals to almost 1/2cup less.

Question for the Washington Back Country route did you guys map out the hole route or download from another source.

Thanks Vincent

AS always please feel free to send us comments questions and we will get back to you quicker then the episode drops with your question! We love feedback
